Compatible Finite Elements For Glacier Modeling

چکیده

We describe the first application of two mixed finite element methods to equations glacier evolution under different simplifying assumptions, along with a framework for implicit solution coupled velocity-thickness equations. The method uses Raviart-Thomas elements velocity and piecewise constants thickness is reframing classic staggered-grid difference case unstructured triangular meshes. second Mardal-Tai-Winther exhibits several desirable properties: order convergence near-exact mass conservation, while resolving both membrane shear stresses in steep topography thin ice.

Mixed Finite Elements for Variational Surface Modeling

Many problems in geometric modeling can be described using variational formulations that define the smoothness of the shape and its behavior w.r.t. the posed modeling constraints. For example, high-quality C2 surfaces that obey boundary conditions on positions, tangents and curvatures can be conveniently defined as solutions of high-order geometric PDEs; the advantage of such a formulation is i...

Subsurface Transport Modeling Using Adaptive Finite Elements

A multi-dimensional finite element method (GWADAPT) which utilizes local mesh adaptation is used to calculate groundwater flow and subsurface transport of contaminant in saturated and unsaturated conditions. The model uses simple modifications to increase computational speed and reduce storage, allowing the model to run on PCs and workstations. GWADAPT can be accessed from the web and downloade...

A coupling procedure for modeling acoustic problems using finite elements and boundary elements

Finite element (FEM) and boundary element (BEM) methods have been used for a long time for the numerical simulation of acoustic problems. The development presented in this paper deals with a general procedure for coupling acoustic finite elements with acoustic boundary elements in order to solve efficiently acoustic problems involving non homogeneous fluids. Emphasis is made on problems where f...

Polygonal finite elements for finite elasticity

Nonlinear elastic materials are of great engineering interest, but challenging to model with standard fi nite elements. The challenges arise because nonlinear elastic materials are characterized by nonconvex stored-energy functions as a result of their ability to undergo large reversible deformations, are incompressible or nearly incompressible, and often times possess complex microstructures. ...
